This has been an active hurricane season, with Guardians of Rescue helping to save animals in numerous hurricane paths. They helped save animals in Texas, following Hurricane Harvey, then they helped save animals in Florida, following Hurricane Irma. Now, the animal rescue group is in Puerto Rico to help save animals that are in some of the worst conditions following Hurricane Maria. Following the Category 4 hit, the island was left without any power, limited means of outside communication, and scarce access to basics such as food and water, leaving many of the animals in deadly conditions.
“Hurricane Maria, which was their second hurricane hit this season, was catastrophic and completely devastated the island,” stated Robert Misseri, founder and president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “There are animals that are suffering, as they have no food or water and no medical care. We will do our best to help as many as we possibly can.”
The people in Puerto Rico, which is U.S. territory, meaning the people who live there are American citizens, were left with debilitating conditions following the hurricane. Those who would typically help with animal rescues are in dire situations themselves, making it nearly impossible for them to help the animals that have been left behind. This is by far the worst situation for the animals that Guardians of Rescue has been running into, but they have a plan that will help them with the rescues.
The rescue group already has a group of volunteers on the ground in Puerto Rico. In addition, they have organized a flight (funded entirely by The Onyx & Breezy Foundation) leaving Florida on Monday, October 2, 2017, to fly to Puerto Rico, where they plan to be on the ground for several weeks conducting animal rescues. Their immediate plan is to take much-needed supplies with them to give to those in need, and bring back 60 rescue dogs. No commercial airline would allow that many animals, so the group has secured a parachute plane that will be used to fly them back to Florida. Once the animals arrive in Florida, they will be taken to several smaller animal rescues, including Save-A-Pet in New York.
“The destruction that Puerto Rico is experiencing is beyond belief,” adds Misseri. “We know there are plenty of groups helping the people, so we are happy to help our four-legged friends the best we can. But we can only do it with the help of those who support our organization, they are the ones that by making donations they truly help make this happen and they save lives.”
The community can assist Guardians of Rescue by donating, with every little bit counting and being put to use to help the animals. Guardians of Rescue provides assistance to animals, helping to rescue them, provide medical care, food, and shelter. They are also instrumental in helping military members with their pets.
