Maryland Military and Veteran Women Business Conference

Over 100 veterans and active duty members congregated at the 5th Annual Maryland Military and Veteran Women Business Conference on Friday, April 27, 2018 to participate in workshops, networking and the Roll Call Awards ceremony. The keynote speaker, Kevin L. Knight, CEO of Knight Solutions, shared his entrepreneurial journey on growing his firm from the basement to become an Inc.

Magazine 5000 company and encouraged participants to be steadfast in their pursuit of owning a business. Knight’s firm is designated as a service disabled veteran-owned business that employees over 300 workers. He shared his strategy for success and encouraged the audience to leverage their status in government contracting by making use of the GSA schedule.

In addition, conference attendees received training on starting a business, government contracting, cyber security, building an all-star team and financing a business. Mary May, an active duty enlisted soldier at Fort Meade, MD shared her delight with the conference and remarked, “Thank you so much for hosting the event and providing this great resource to our community! I really enjoyed the event, it was enlightening with a good balance of fun and keeping it real. I really hope one day to pay it back just as you are doing today, and I hope to attend next year!”

To close out the conference, the winners of the Roll Call Awards were announced. The Community College of Baltimore County – Veteran Services Department was presented with a Roll Call Award for the Organization Supporting Women Veteran Entrepreneurs. Christina Duncan, Director of Veteran Services at CCBC received the award on behalf of the organization. Finally, the Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN) won the Hero Award which was presented to Dr. Lynn C. Watts, Executive Director of SWAN.
