AUSTIN _ The Fairview, a historic Austin bed and breakfast, is saying “thank you” to military personnel who are presently serving or who previously served the United States and Canada through the B&Bs for Vets program by offering a complimentary stay over Veterans Day weekend.
Hundreds of inns and B&Bs have come together, making this the largest known effort within the lodging industry to honor active military and veterans.
“The men and women in our military show great courage and resilience,” said Jimi Ballard, who co-owns The Fairview bed and breakfast with his wife. “We are incredibly grateful and excited to join other properties in a show of appreciation and camaraderie,” added Vivian Ballard.
Now celebrating a milestone 10th anniversary, the B&Bs for Vets program spans the globe with multiple properties in several U.S. states extending a free stay. Most complimentary rooms will be offered on November 11th, 2017, or the days surrounding the holiday, though this will vary from inn to inn.
At present, The Fairview is the only bed and breakfast in Texas participating in the program. It’s believed more than $2.5 million in free rooms have been extended to vets over the tenure of the program.
The B&Bs for Vets program started in 2008 after Kathleen Panek, co-owner of the Gillum House B&B in Shinnston, West Virginia, and a handful of other innkeepers in the area opened their doors to veterans in honor of Veterans Day. In 2010, the program went international with inns and B&Bs in the US, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, France and Namibia, Africa participating. Active military and veterans interested in reserving a room will be required to show proof of military service. A complete list of participating properties can be found at www.BandBsforVets.org. The B&Bs for Vets program is now run by the Association of Independent Hospitality Professionals in collaboration with a number of national and state inn associations.
ABOUT THE FAIRVIEW
Located in the heart of downtown Austin, just four blocks from the trendy South Congress (SoCo) district, The Fairview bed and breakfast is a historic landmark property affectionately known as The Gullett House. Built in 1910 by an early Texas cattleman for his daughters, the home was eventually purchased by Tom Gullett, the first superintendent of the local school district. In the early 1990’s the home first transitioned into a bed and breakfast and in 2000 Jimi and Vivian Ballard purchased the property as their home. After extensive renovations, the Ballard’s reopened the estate as a bed and breakfast in 2014. Today, The Fairview is a six room, family-and-pet friendly, B&B with a modern interior and thoughtfully preserved historic elements. The Fairview is located at 1304 Newning Ave, Austin, TX 78704.
