Chef Robert Irvine Hosts SAMHSA’s Voice Awards Honoring Military

The Los Angeles event honored service men and women who have overcome mental illnesses and addictions. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) 2017 Voice Awards program recognized television and film writers and producers along with community leaders for outstanding efforts to raise awareness and understanding of mental illnesses and/or addictions.

The 12th annual Voice Awards, highlighting the theme Honoring Those Who Serve: Hope, Resilience, and Recovery, spotlighted efforts that provide hope and support to past and present military service members and their families who have faced mental health and addiction challenges. This year’s event was held on August 16, 2017, at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles.

The Voice Awards was hosted by celebrity chef Robert Irvine, who has been an ardent supporter of issues affecting military personnel and their families through the Robert Irvine Foundation. With more than 27 years in the culinary field, chef Irvine has cooked his way throughout the world in restaurants, hotels and on the high seas. As the host of Restaurant: Impossible, he saved struggling restaurants across America by assessing a restaurant’s weak spots and helping owners and managers overhaul them. He has received special recognition for his commitment to the U.S. military when he was designated Honorary Chief Petty Officer by the U.S. Navy; in 2015, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society bestowed upon him the Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment and Support of Our Service Members.

In addition to honoring community-based consumer, peer, and family leaders who champion recovery from mental illness and/or addictions, the Voice Awards also recognized writers and producers for their exemplary portrayals of military service members, their families, and the path to recovery. This year’s finalists included the feature films Captain Fantastic and Megan Leavey; documentaries Almost Sunrise, Iron Will, and The S Word; and television shows Chris Gethard: Career Suicide (HBO), Jane the Virgin (CW), One Day at a Time (Netflix), The Warfighters (History Channel), and This Is Us (NBC).

Operation 11/11 Gives Veterans Concierge- Level Health Care at No Cost on Veterans Day

During Operation 11/11, all veterans who register at Medici will have access to text, voice or video consultations with doctors specializing in general practice, psychiatry, dermatology, orthopedics and more. With this access, veterans can receive expert advice, diagnosis, prescriptions or referrals to other specialists. Proof of military service is required, although health insurance is not needed.

Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes Third Annual Marriage Retreat

The Heroes Freedom Weekend is a 3-4 day relaxing marriage enrichment retreat for combat wounded veteran couples.

The primary goal is strengthening the bonds of marriage for Veteran couples who have so much additional stress in their lives due to physical and mental wounds from war.

Along with the couples who attend, we see so much value in the efficacy of our program, helping to avoid situations that include divorce, custody battles, depression and often suicide or attempted suicide. A strong marriage acts as a pillar of support in the life of a wounded veteran, to allow him/her to survive, recover and rebuild.

A recent study showed that suicide rates in the military were highest among people divorced or separated — with a rate of 19 per 100,000 — 24% higher than troops who are single. It also showed that relationship problems are a common occurrence preceding suicide. showing that 39.5 percent of suicide attempt cases had experienced a failed relationship within 90 days of the suicide event. Primarily these involved romantic partners, but also included close friends and family.

5 Ways to Create an Effective Military-to-Civilian Resume

Transitioning from military to civilian life is difficult. Communication is subtle in the civilian world, and that can be tough when you’re used to straightforward and explicit military orders.

When you’re applying for a job, you have to navigate this communication gap. There’s also the additional challenge of learning how to structure a resume when you’ve always, or for a long time, had a Field Service Record to explain your qualifications to superiors.

These five strategies can help you manage the transition by creating a strong  military-to-civilian resume that will land you job interviews.

#1: Reframe your Skills to Target Civilian Employers

As a military veteran, you have many resume skills that civilian employers need. To start, you have certain technical and job-specific skills that qualify you for civilian jobs. You just need to know how to present them effectively.

Military Connection and other organizations have automated tools at your disposal. Military Connections lets you enter your Military Occupational Specialty code or title, or a keyword from that title, and then presents jobs you might qualify for, and how you would use your skills in those jobs.

Additionally, according to researchers from LinkedIn, veterans are more likely than lifelong civilians to be:

  • Reliable team players
  • Strong problem solvers
  • Critical thinkers
  • Team leaders
  • Detail-oriented workers

Don’t underestimate the power of soft skills. They’re even more in-demand than technical abilities for many types of jobs.

#2: Translate Military Jargon into Language that Civilians Can Understand

A civilian human resources manager might not know the difference between a senior noncommissioned officer and a squad leader, or how many people are in a battalion versus a platoon. Use civilian terms like “supervised,” “led,” and “mentored” to indicate your level of responsibility and how you affected the personnel under your command.

Additionally, avoid all military acronyms if you’re applying to a civilian company. Don’t just spell them out; a civilian employer might not understand “Officer Efficiency Reports” any better than they understand “OER.” Translate it to “performance review.” Remember, an employer wants to be confident you understand the civilian workforce.

#3: Open with a Qualifications Summary or Resume Summary

When you’re transitioning from military to civilian work, you’re changing industries. You should start your resume by highlighting those skills and achievements that will transfer best to your new industry.

As an industry-switcher, you should begin your resume with a resume summary or qualifications summary. Both are specific styles of resume introductions that draw attention to your skills or accomplishments rather than your experience.

A qualifications summary:

  • Focuses on skills
  • Uses five or six bullet points
  • Showcases abilities and achievements relevant to your target job
  • Highlights your value to a potential employer

A resume summary:

  • Focuses on your key accomplishments
  • Uses data to quantify these accomplishments
  • Is formatted using bullets with category subheadings

Determine whether your skill set or your various achievements are more marketable to your desired job, and choose the introduction that best reflects you as a candidate.

#4: Use Quantifiable Information to Highlight Your Accomplishments

Regardless of which introduction you end up choosing, fill the body of your resume with numerical data that quantifies your accomplishments. Under each job heading, introduce three to five bullet points, each with the following three-part structure:

  • Action verb
  • Data point
  • Relevant job responsibility

You don’t have to format every bullet point in this order, and it’s more than fine to include two pieces of data under the same bullet. For example:

“Provided safety training to three 150-member companies yearly, increasing compliance and reducing the number of injuries by 23%

The more quantifiable information you can attach to active descriptions of your work, the better an employer will understand that you get results.

#5: Tailor Your Skills and Experience to the Job Posting

Finally, exclude from your resume any information that doesn’t relate to your target job. All resumes should be specific, but tailoring to the position is particularly important for veterans.

Some employers think that a newly discharged or retired veteran is out of touch with the civilian working world, or that military skills aren’t useful in the private sector. You have to show them that this isn’t true.

Adjust your resume a bit for each job posting. It takes extra time, but it also shows an employer that you’re committed to the role rather than someone sending out bulk job applications.

The Takeaway

As a veteran, you have skills that civilians don’t, but employers won’t know it unless you explicitly show them. Take the time to create a military-to-civilian resume that shows all of the ways that you stand out.

Gary Sinise To Host Hope For The Warriors 10th Annual Got Heart Give Hope Gala

Award-winning actor/humanitarian Gary Sinise will host Hope For The Warriors 10th Annual Got Heart Give Hope Gala Thursday, Oct. 17 at Union Station in Washington, DC.

Sinise’s portrayal of Lt. Dan Taylor in “Forrest Gump” formed a connection with servicemen and women throughout the military community. After several USO handshake tours in 2003, Sinise formed the “Lt. Dan Band” in early 2004 and began entertaining troops serving at home and abroad.

In 2011, Sinise established the Gary Sinise Foundation with a mission to serve and honor our nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need by creating and supporting unique programs that entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen and build communities. Of its many outreach efforts, the Gary Sinise Foundation is building custom Smart Homes for severely wounded veterans, serving hearty meals to deploying troops and hosting spirit-boosting festivals for patients, families and medical staff at military hospitals.

Hope For The Warriors has partnered with the Gary Sinise Foundation to help its R.I.S.E. program provide adaptive homes to combat-wounded veterans. Hope For The Warriors’ Make a House a Home program offers grants to enhance the homes by incorporating hobbies, in-home businesses and other life passions that personalize the space for the individual/family.

Joining Sinise as co-host is retired U.S. Marine Col. Barney Barnum Jr. Barnum served 27 years in the United States Marine Corps and was the fourth Marine to receive the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the annual event honors members of our nation’s armed forces and their families with the Vigiano Family Hope & Courage Awards. In addition, Hope For The Warriors will introduce six new awards highlighting individuals, corporations and organizations who have stood beside the organization in serving military families.

This year’s gala honors the memory of John Vigiano (1938-2018). A longtime Hope For The Warriors volunteer and supporter, Vigiano and his family have lived a life of service. Vigiano, a former Marine, retired as decorated FDNY fire captain. Despite his record of service, Vigiano was most proud of his family and the paths his two sons chose: John Jr., a FDNY firefighter, and Joe, a NYPD detective, both losing their lives in the 9/11 attacks.

The best way to provide good jobs for U.S. veterans is by helping other U.S. veterans to start successful businesses, because veterans like to hire veterans.

They share a camaraderie and respect for each other unlike any other. And they all have been trained how to work together effectively for maximum results.

Six years ago, in order to get more U.S. veterans employed with good wages I began teaching business minded veterans how to start a strong and successful Maintenance company from scratch. I realized that the more veteran owned businesses I created, the more veterans would get hired. I have developed 80 U.S. Military Maintenance businesses since. It has been an overwhelming success! They have earned millions of dollars and are employing thousands of other veterans.

But before I go further, I will introduce myself. Then I will summarize what I will do with you if you choose for me to show you how to start a maintenance business of your own, in just a week.

VetsAid Selects 2019 Veteran NonProfit Partners to Benefit from Concert

VetsAid, the third annual concert to support veterans and their families hosted by Joe Walsh, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee and multi GRAMMY Award recipient, has selected the nonprofit partners that will benefit from this year’s November 10th concert at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

The grants are broken out into large and small grant recipients and all net proceeds from the concert determine the final grant amounts. Founded by Walsh in 2017, the 501C3 VetsAid has disbursed over $1.2M to veteran-serving nonprofits.

The large grant recipients selected are: Combined Arms, Headstrong Project, United States Veterans Initiative (U.S. Vets), Next Op Veterans, Vets4Warriors, Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, Swords to Plowshares and Sentinels of Freedom.

The small grant recipients selected are: Grace After Fire, Train A Dog Save A Warrior (TADSAW), Texas Veterans Outdoors, Smiles for Veterans, Hero’s Bridge, Every Third Saturday, Vets on Track Foundation, Easter Seals Houston and Heartstrides.

Providing support to organizations that care for the nation’s veterans and military families is deeply personal to Walsh, a Gold Star survivor whose father died while on active duty on Okinawa, Japan when Walsh was 20 months old.

“It’s with great excitement that we announce our grant recipients for VetsAid 2019,” explains Joe Walsh. “VetsAid is a festival that we bring to points across this great country of ours and this year we are honored to spread the love and funds to the veterans community in and around the Houston metro area. Come celebrate with us this November 10th at the Toyota Center!”

With assistance from the National Association of Veteran-Serving Organizations (NAVSO), Walsh and the Board of VetsAid reviewed numerous organizations before selecting these 17 veteran focused nonprofits.

“Mr. Walsh is a great philanthropist and advocate for the military and veteran community,” says Kelly Finn Störmer, Chief Operating Officer of the National Association of Veteran-Serving Organizations (NAVSO), the organization assisting the selection process. “We are honored to partner with VetsAid to recommend high impact programs creating positive change for veterans and military families.”

Houston has the 2nd largest veteran population in the nation with over 250,000 veterans. Mr. Walsh will serve as the keynote speaker and Grand Marshal of the “Houston Salutes American Heroes Veterans Day Celebration” honoring the brave men, women and families who have fought and sacrificed for the nation’s liberty and freedom.

VetsAid 2019 will feature sets from ZZ Top, Brad Paisley, Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit and Joe Walsh and will take place at 5:30pm on Sunday, November 10, 2019, on the eve of Veterans Day, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Tickets are on sale now at: www.toyotacenter.com.
