The 10th annual Honoring Women Veterans Conference was held on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the University of Evansville in Evansville, IN. The conference began in 2010 as a collaborative effort between UE and the Vet Center with partners including the VA Evansville Health Care Center in association with the Marion, IL VAMC.
The Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University provided grant funding for the first several years and the non-profit, Tri-State Women Veterans Association (established out of the first conference in 2010) and headed by Commander Barbara Kortz, a Marine Corps Veteran, now assumes fundraising responsibilities and management of conference-specific funds.
The HWVC is well supported through community donations from companies, Veteran Service Organizations and individuals. The University of Evansville provides a beautiful venue in the Eykamp Hall of Ridgeway University Center for the exhibitors and VA benefits experts to set up and/or present on topics of interest in breakout sessions.
The 2019 Honoring Women Veterans Conference was honored to have Deborah Delk, Comedian, Army Veteran of Desert Storm with a Nursing Degree from Emory University as our keynote speaker. Ms. Delk’s wit and energy were entertaining and her heart-felt message was inspirational.
The 2019 HWVC provided free opportunities for the 125 women veteran participants on topics of VA benefits and area services to veterans; health and wellness and relaxation through Healing Touch, music therapy, yoga and more. While the afternoon “pampering” is enjoyed, it is the camaraderie with other women veterans that is noted as most significant in follow-up comments. The Memory Corner is a place to sit, share stories and visit and is another cherished opportunity each year for many participants.
